PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I hope this greeting finds
you well and enjoying summer at the sea shore.
Dianne’s surgery for uterine cancer was very successful and the
Oncologist’s report was spectacular – she will not need any follow-up
treatment! She is doing really well and
we both send our thanks for all your prayers and good wishes.
This week I learned of some
medical news about another member – Otts Bortle – who is now doing well! Around July 11th he was working
at home installing crown molding in the bathroom. A strange tingling sensation in his arm evolved into a much more
severe problem. Otts had a stroke which
was compounded by a series of seizures which they later determined were incited
by the stroke. A breathing tube was
inserted and tubes and monitoring devices were everywhere. He was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit
where his condition was not good. But
then…all kinds of miracles took place – he stopped seizing, regained his
speech, his vision, the use of his arm and leg and was able to walk by the time
he was moved to a regular care unit.
Ten days later he was released from the hospital and is now at home
where he is doing really well. He has
temporarily lost some of his memory – but not of his Beachcomber Pals! He can’t drive for a few months so his vette
is in need of volunteer drivers! Anyone
interested? Call Otts at
410-352-3027! Let’s keep him and Pat in
our prayers and thoughts. Please try to
visit if you can.
The Club’s August 20th
Car Show is upon us. We need to come
together as a club to achieve the demands of putting on a successful car
show. I implore you to please come to
the August 4th meeting to sign up for the various tasks that need to
be completed during the day of the show.
We will meet at 7 a.m. for set up then go all day until the awards are
done at 2 p.m. So many members have
been extremely active already. Buddy
Clark has brought in several new sponsors.
Doug & Cindy Riniker have been beating the sidewalks for donations
for door prizes and have rounded up 4 nice gift certificates from local restaurants
as well as a significant gift certificate from Jiffy Lube. Connie Magee has been putting out letters to
sponsors and contributors for items for our “goody bags” and later she, Rose
Leister, and Marie Meyers will be shopping for all the food we’ll sell that
day. Eric Leister, Buddy Clark, and Don
Magee spent all day Friday at the Harrington Car Show handing out flyers for
our car show. Michele Esposito, on
behalf of her company, has taken 2 $50 sponsors and 6 $30 sponsors plus she’s
donated 200 water bottles for the goody bags.
Rick Berry contributed a door prize featuring the corvette racing team
with their signatures. At the top of
the list is Co-chair Don Magee who is on top of all the organizing and myriad
details that need to be arranged before and on the big day…including acquiring
a box full of cozies from the Green Turtle for our goody bags. In addition to all these members we still
need your help, even if it is for an hour or two. We have morning set up duties starting at 7 a.m., registration
duties from 9-11 a.m., food and beverage sales all day, judging, vote tallying,
organization, and closing duties at 2 p.m..
Your help in needed. Please give
of yourself as sort of a thank you for what the club tries to do for you – the
member – FREE - Holiday Party, Adopt-A-Highway Clean Up Night, plus other little
freebee perks here and there during the year.
I heard the Tangier Island
Cruise was really a lot of fun and the food was great! Our July 16th outing at
Shorebirds stadium was a great success.
We paraded the field in our vetts to the roar of the crowd. Thanks to everyone who participated in these
recent events.
The club members have been
invited to a pool party at Linda & Rick Berry’s on this Saturday, July 30th. See the activities section for further
details.
Mark your calendar for Tuesday – August 16th
– between 5 & 8 p.m. - Join your club members for the cruise in at the
Dairy Queen in Millsboro on Rt 24 East – across the street from the Post Office
at the V in the road.
Looking forward to seeing a
lot of you at the August 4th meeting at the Georgia House in
Millsboro!
Be Safe -
Bill

MINUTES
BEACHCOMBERS CORVETTE CLUB
JULY 7, 2005
The
meeting was called to order at 7:30 by Sergeant at Arms, Don Magee. Present at the meeting were Ray Myers, Don
and Connie Magee, Michelle and Wayne Esposito, Eric and Rose Leister, Buddy
Clark, Bill Shaw, Lawrence and Lana Wesley, Rick Berry, Ed and Tanya Marcelle,
and guests Randy and Joan.
President
Bill Shaw asked for a motion to have the previous minutes approved as stated in
the newsletter. Connie make a
motion to have them approved and Ed
seconded the motion, and all approved.
Bill
gave the Treasurer’s report and Rose made a motion to have them accepted and
Ray seconded, and all approved.
Buddy
mentioned that in the last newsletter, the treasurer’s report was wrong, the
figures did not add up correctly. Bill
is to check with Lynne on the report as printed in the newsletter.
Vice
President, Eric Leister, read a new application received with the dues of an
Albert Green. All members were in
agreement to accept him into the club.
A
discussion was held on applications that are received and that no one should be
admitted into the club unless the proper dues are paid. Everyone agreed.
The
historian, Connie Magee, stated that everyone who attended the Tangier Island
cruise had a great time and the food was wonderful. Pictures were passed around for everyone to see. Copies of
recipes were on the front table for the food that was on the island. Connie also mentioned that calendars were
also on the front table for anyone who had not received one.
Bill
mentioned the cruise to the Dairy Queen on July 19th.
Bill
thanked everyone for the cards, food and telephone calls received for Dianne
who had had surgery on June 27th.
We are all glad to hear that Dianne is doing well and that the prognosis
is good. A big get well wish was sent
to Dianne from everyone at the club.
Doug
mentioned that Bill Vernon had called him and had talked to Lee at First State
in reference to a trophy case. Lee
likes a Jerry Campbell out of Bridgeville and his cost to build a trophy case
for us would be $1,900.00. Lee has
agreed to pay $1,500.00. Connie made a
motion for the club to pick up the remainder of the cost of $400.00 and this
was seconded by Doug, and all were in favor.
Cindy will make a call to Lee to tell him to proceed.
Bill
mentioned the upcoming car show and the participation needed. Connie passed around sign-up sheets for
everyone to put in a time to work on that day at the registration and food
table. Don mentioned that he had been
around to some additional sponsors to try to get money. Michelle Esposito, on behalf of her company,
volunteers to sponsor the two $50.00 awards, and 6 $30.00 awards. Way to go Michelle!!!
Rick
showed the plaques that were given out at previous car shows of First State
Corvette and the awards for the top winners.
After having a discussion on this, it was agreed that the round awards
would be given to our top seven winners.
The plaques with the picture of the individual cars would be given to
the twenty show winners and that we would also give an award to First State,
our sponsor. Everyone who participates
in the car show will be given a plaque with a picture of their car. We have to decide on a backdrop for the
pictures of the cars.
A
thank you was given to Eric, Buddy and Don for going to the Harrington car show
to pass out our flyers.
Cindy
mentioned that her and Doug had gotten several door prizes, two $25.00 gift
certificates to Georgia House Restaurant, two $25.00 gift certificates from La
Tolteca, and a $30.99 certificate for an oil change from Jiffy Lube. Way to go Cindy and Doug.
Rick
Berry gave a door prize of the corvette racing team, a program and a picture
with all their signatures.
Buddy
turned in a $15.00 donation from a business of Nick and Tony.
Rick
invited everyone to his house for a pool party on July 30th
beginning at noon. Everyone who attends
should bring a covered dish. Please
rsvp to Rick at 697-9758 or his cell at 632-8041.
With
no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:35.
