ON TUESDAY, MAY 3RD – ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY SPRING ROAD CLEAN UP

As you know your club adopted a portion of Long Neck Road as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program.  Each year we are responsible for picking up trash along the roadside of our mile.  It’s now time to do it for 2005.  We’ll meet at the Wilmington Trust Company Branch at the corner of Route 24 and Long Neck Road at 6 p.m.  We get spiffed up in our orange and yellow reflective vests and head out on Long Neck Road to beautify our area.  When the clean up is done, we scurry to Grotto Pizza for………you guessed it!  PIZZA!  We always have a good time and we feel real good after fulfilling this requirement of the program.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me and the other officers.  With the support of each of you we now embark on a year in which we will strive to instill in you a genuine desire to support our club through your consistent participation in activities and attendance at meetings to the best of your ability.  Our club can be successful…but only as much as YOU want us to be.  Remember you each have a voice in what we do but you must speak.   Each member is an integral part of our structure and no one person stands higher than another.  If I ever lose sight of that…just remind me!

Your officers also ask you to help us work hard to support the other two local Corvette clubs to the best of our ability.   Strength is always in numbers.

I can not stress enough the importance of expressing yourself in club matters even if you have a position that is different from what appears to be the accepted.  Appearances can be deceptive and perhaps alternative suggestions would be liked more that you might imagine.  The only thing I ask in this regard is to evaluate the issue and your position and decide if your discussion should be presented to the officers first before going to the entire membership.

With all that in mind……….let’s have a great year and THANKS again!

Bill

CLUB JACKETS AND POLO SHIRTSBill & Dianne Shaw are preparing an order for club jackets and men’s and lady’s polo-type shirts.  Prices will be announced at the May 5th meeting and will be placed in the May newsletter.  Now is the time to order because at least 11 members want to order shirts and at least 1 wants a jacket.    Come to the meeting and place your order or call Bill or Dianne at (302) 541-4891.  You pay when you get your shirt or jacket.

NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM UPDATES FROM ED MARCELLE…

THEY’RE ON THEIR WAY TO THE $6 MILLION DOLLAR FUNDRAISING GOAL

The fundraising effort has added up to $2 million already being raised!  Ed also announced that there will only be 1 PACE CAR for this Indianapolis 500 this year and it will be a Z06!

HAPPY ARE THOSE WHO ATTEND CLUB MEETINGS

FOR THEY COULD BE REWARDED

The $32.00 April 50/50 was won by Janet Smith.

It was so good to see Bruce & Margaret Bent at the meeting and they were kind enough to donate 2 Door Prizes for the evening.  Congratulations Bruce!  Bruce is the State President of another organization and unfortunately they meet on the 1st Thursday of the month so we’re not going to see too much of Bruce over the next few months but we hope Margaret will join us whenever she can.  The Door Prizes were won by Lawrence Wesley and Richard Miller.

Our door prizes are simply a fun perk for attending the meeting.  You may donate a wrapped, moderately priced gift item to the club which will then be used as a door prize at a future meeting.  Examples of door prizes might be wine, auto cleaning supplies, garden items, corvette books etc.

AS WE ARRIVED THE TRUMPETS BLARED INTO THE CRISP NIGHT AIR AND THE LINE WAS ALREADY FORMING IN FRONT OF THE MAJESTIC CASTLE.   We moved forward with great haste so as not to be lost in the hordes of peasants pushing their way to the gates.  We were shocked at the growing numbers of guests invited by King Forstenmorg and Princess Leia to the Tournament and Banquet for we thought surely the Lords and Ladies from the Realm of Beachcombers of Sussex would have been the only favored guests.  Undaunted by the others we drifted about regally bearing our golden crowns.  The greeting hall was massive and while it was poorly lighted the humble Pages did their best as light bearers.  We made our way to the location of the grog which was befittingly poured into vessels with sparkling colored lights.  As we were enjoying the libation the huge doors to the banquet room were thrust open and there appeared the King who greeted us warmly and invited us into the banquet hall.  As we entered it was a sight to behold… a sand-laden arena surrounded by tiers of banquet tables ( with NO obstructed seats).

The dinnerware was exquisite pewter but alas….there were no utensils!!!!  The royal feast was served and eaten in the traditional manner of the time.  The soup was poured and we drank from the bowl.  To our wonderment we dined on chicken, ribs, and potatoes which we ate with our fingers while the King’s Royal Andalusian Stallions pranced and executed intricate moves to the raves of the crowd.   As we ate dessert the knights competed in an array of medieval games and jousting to determine who would be the Knight of the Kingdom.  As a regal evening came to an end Lord Thomas Brinker presented Lady Carolyn with a beautiful rose and the King and Princess of Forstenmorg bid us a safe journey home.  What an experience…what a hoot!  We had a great time!  Thanks to Carolyn & Tom for getting us there and back home safely.  Special thanks to  Carolyn for coming up with such a great outing for our club.   Wish more of you would have attended.  You missed a great adventure back in time!

Upcoming Events: The events posted in this area are being hosted by your Beachcombers Club or one of the other two local Clubs - First State Corvette Club or Eastern Shore Corvette Club (Shorevettes).

BEACHCOMBERS CORVETTE CLUB

MINUTES

April 7, 2005

bulletPresident Joe Worts called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
bullet29 members were present:  Ray & Marie Myers, Don and Connie Magee, Bill and Dianne Shaw, Rose and Eric Leister, Dale and Lynne Buckwalter, Joe Worts, Tom and Carolyn Brinker and Donna Dunning, Bruce & Margaret Bent, Buddy Clark, Richard & Kathy Miller, Doug & Cindy Riniker, Leonard & Barbara Romansoff, Lewis & Janet Smith, Lawrence & Lana Wesley, Ed and Tonya Marcelle were present.
bulletThe President welcomed everyone and advised Connie will pass out the ballots during the meeting to vote for our new officers.
bulletKathy Miller asked to be taken off the ballot, she now has other commitments with another group and mentioned what a wonderful job Carolyn is doing.
bulletLynn read the treasure report and it was motioned to accept report as read by Bill Shaw, Don Magee seconded it.
bulletConnie pasted out 2004-2005 calendars to all who attended with events and Birthday listings.

Vice President Dale stated that membership was down now about 36 and was up to about 85. He mentioned we might want to start a late fee for members that did not renew on time. Ray mentioned he thought this would have to be changed in the by laws. Dale and others did not feel it had to be in the bylaws however Don stated it would have to be done at the next renewal if the club wants to start this procedure. Marie stated we could send letter to members at the next renewal.

bullet Joe stated he would like to divide the list of members who did not renew between the past presidents and call them to see why they did not renew.
bulletConnie mentioned we could set up a committee for telephone chair and divide names up to have calls made.
bulletLeonard mentioned he pays dues and is here as much as he can be and wants to know why he can’t vote.
bulletJoe and other members stated the by laws state you must be an active member to vote.
bulletEric stated you must be active member to vote, by attending meeting and social functions; it is very frustrating when you have a big function and only a few members attend. He mentioned the attendance at the March St. Patrick’s day party at the Brinkers.
bulletBruce stated when you work crazy hours and have other commitments sometimes its hard to attend meetings, however wants to stay as a member.
bulletJoe stated all clubs and organizations have a hard time with memberships and they all go up and down. We are Beachcombers Corvette members for our love of Corvettes and the friendship of the members.
bulletJoe stated we need to focus big on the car show and that he will be working on it this year, with the help of John Dunning who did a outstanding job last year. Joe has talked to Lee and we should have the car show at the same time this year 8-2-05 this will not conflict with any other shows. Millsboro is not having big Thursday and Gumsboro not having a show this year. We need to get the word out early this year of our car show. Last year the club pasted out flyers at the Harrington show, and was told many who attended our event due to the flyers at the Harrington show.
bulletRay mentioned Bill Shaw our new President should go over to First State with Don Magee and take the sponsorship letter and introduce Bill.
bulletBill mentioned he knows Lee very well they purchased a vehicle from him.
bulletJoe mentioned the trophy case that Lee was working on. As of the last mention of this project the club was to bring all trophies so we could see what size is needed. We will have to check with Lenny who has the trophies.
bulletKathy stated we had few vendors last year and would like to see more. Joe stated most of the vendors wanted to sell food which was our main money maker.
bulletKathy stated it would be nice if we can get vendors who have cleaning materials and other items to sell that can be used for the vehicles.
bulletEd talked about the corvette museum and thanked everyone. One pace car this year the winner of the Indy 500 will win the Z06.
bulletCarol reviewed up coming events 4-16-5 Medieval Times Dinner Show, not to late to attend if anyone else wanted to come. They will meet in the Pickle’s parking lot at the other end by the Pizza Palace due to the parking lot being repaired on the Pickle’s side.
bulletCarol mentioned we have no May activities at this time, June 11th will be Tangier Island and Boat ride, and passed around sign up sheet again.
bulletEd mentioned that this date did conflict with one of their events. The club decided it was too late to change the date for Tangier, however we will pay attention to our dates so we don’t have a conflict again.
bulletCarol stated July 16th will be the Shorebirds event, and list was passed around. Carol explained to the club about this event how we will display our vehicles in front of the stadium.
bulletDale the vice president read an application for our guest Joseph and Bertha Scott of 60 Radcliffe Drive Rehoboth, DE owners of a 1984 Black Coupe.    The club voting and accepted them as new members.
bulletConnie mentioned the Adopt a Highway clean up last year was on 5-4-5. We need to set the date tonight. the club agreed to have it on 5-3-5 and meet at the Wilmington Trust Bank on the corner at 6.00 pm. Joe will pick up the vests.
