WE TOOK
OURSELVES OUT
TO THE
BALLGAME - and
a GREAT time was had by all.
Our outing on August 7th boasted our parade around the field,
a Shorebirds
ballgame, and fireworks! Quite a
bash!
The heat of the early
August Saturday was sweltering as we worked around our homes completing some of
those never-ending chores or running furiously around those coastal town streets
doing errands but most of us managed to put our demands aside in time to meet at
the WaWa in Millsboro for our inland cruise to Purdue Stadium for the evening.
Carolyn & Tom Brinker couldn’t put their demands aside though! As
we met at WaWa they were en-route from Georgia (?) driving 2 new school busses
from the factory to their new seaside owners.
The word was…they’d meet us at the stadium...yeah…right!
As Bill & I pulled
onto the WaWa lot we saw this beautiful, older, two-tone golden colored
Corvette. It is the most beautiful
Corvette I have ever seen…honestly!!!!!!!
I quickly learned it was the Corvette of Dale & Lynne Buckwalter.
It’s hard to believe that just weeks before the Vette didn’t have an
engine in it!!!!!!!!!!! Cudos, Cudos,
Cudos to the Buckwalters. Their 1956
Aztec Copper CNV is just beautiful! (Note:
it is also FOR SALE – interested?)
Well the pressures of
the day subsided as we headed West on Route 24 at our leisurely pace.
I even saw a sigh of relief in the faces of Edie & Joe Worts who had
been working furiously for weeks to move out of one house and into the other
while doing rehab along the way. Edie
clung to her coffee (her life blood in recent weeks) and Joe bore battle scares
in his stitched-up nose…JOE - you catch falling furniture with your hands and
body…not your NOSE!
Don & Connie
Magee’s grandson was anxious for them to get to the stadium because he was
going to ride on “Grandpa’s” car during the parade!!!!!
All of us arrived safely and parked our “pride & joys” at the
gates for all game-goers to admire. We
socialized…sported our new shirts…recruited for new members …dusted our
Vettes…and drank! It was hot
remember!
I decided…the
newness or oldness of your Corvette does not matter…the beauty of it does…
America
’s Sportscar…it
doesn’t get any better than this!
On cue we evacuated
our parking spaces and headed for the back lot to line up for the parade of
Vettes…oldest (the Buckwalter’s ’56) to newest (the Worts’ “03
50th Anniversary)! We
rode and waved to the cheers of the crowd!!!!!
How exciting!!!!!! Back into
our parking places and inside the stadium we went…to satisfy our hunger and
thurst…oh yeah…and to watch the game J
!
The Dunnings and
Ellis’ were joined by more family members.
T.R. Ellis celebrated his 50th birthday!
The Brinkers arrived IN THE SCHOOL BUSSES!
A great time was had
by all. Hope YOU will join us next
time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The wagon was loaded as I blazed my way up Rt 113 at 6:30 a.m……far
ahead of the maddening crowd that would be leaving the beach after there week of
vacation! That was probably the only
good thing about meeting other members at that hour of the morning!
Undaunted by the time, and absent my coffee (ultimate sacrifice), I went
forward.
Bill had already been at work for a hour but I know he was cheering me
on.
Georgetown
is always farther than I judge but I got there just a
little late. As I pulled onto the
parking lot I was astounded to see only the Magees and Peter Bon!
The contents of their vehicles were already unloaded and now mine was
added to it. We peered into the
distance hoping to catch glimpse of others!
Don and Peter took off with signs, stakes, and mallots in hand and began
the demanding task of posting the signs in the hot temp and stifling humidity.
Connie and I sorted items as we awaited the arrival of the folding
tables. Don and Peter joined
us…bearing their brand new club shirts… soaked!
Connie and I were “wet heads”…no comment please!
The Brinkers arrived with their 6 large folding tables in tow and the
set up began. Rick Berry arrived
with his trailer! I laughed to
myself when I saw him…wondering what on earth he had in that thing.
He pulled up in front and threw open the doors and what to our wondering
eyes should appear but a pop-up canopy for registration and a golf cart for
running errands and shuttling those in need of a ride.
This man has it all together! Guess
he’s “been there…done that”.
No more laughs from me…just a happy smile for his help.
With very little instruction the Brinkers set up the registration table
and before they could open their folding chairs the first registrant was in line
with money in hand. Joe Worts was
there by then and helped out. About
61 other participants followed throughout the registration period.
The turn out was GREAT! Carolyn
and Tom went from novice registrars to experts in one car show!
Rich Berry and Ed Marcelle demonstrated great skill and dexterity by
putting together the newly acquired Club gas stove.
By the way…Rick had all the necessary tools for this major tasking!
Eric and Rose Leister arrived with a van filled with what seemed to be
800 cases of water and sodas. Ya
know the sodas did not get into and out of the van by themselves!
What a chore!
Doug Riniker arrived with an ice chest filled with ice.
I’d never before seen a 4-man ice chest! That’s how many men it took
to get it out of Doug’s SUV. I
think Doug does a lot of serious fishing…or does he just tell a lot of serious
fish stories? Doug, Don, Eric, and I
don’t know who else set out with transferring the ice and soda to the 5 ice
chests in waiting.
John Dunning arrived on his Harley followed by Donna in the van carrying
all the beautiful trophies. Together
they unloaded the van then we found out Donna was sick…but she was
there…trooper that she is. We
tried to get her to go home…the heat and humidity were not good for her.
Eventually she left…still sick!
Connie and I set up the trophy and door prize tables and
I ran to WalMart to buy buckets! It
does not matter why I bought buckets…trust me.
Rose and Connie set up the “kitchen” cooking and serving area
like the pros they are. The decision
to cook the scrapple in advance and heat it up that morning was brilliant!
The decision to buy a stove and cook the hot dogs was equally wise.
There was no waiting in line for food and those two chicks (I can say
that because I am female) moved food and drink like I have never seen it move
before. Those 2 kept pace all day BY
THEMSELVES! They sold bunches of
food and drink. They both wore
shorts and have nice legs…I think those were nice selling points.
The cash register bell rang each time a sale was made!
It rang all day long. Music
to our ears!
Gloria Ellis and me set up vendor booths.
Rick and Ed set up a canopy for Gloria. The radio station played, the DJ
played, people came and went after eating and drinking…some rested in the
shade of the building’s overhang.
First
State
may have sold a vehicle to someone in attendance.
Shelly Murray from Compassionate Care Hospice arrived in time to view
the cars with her fiancé. She told
Joe Worts that a wedding date had not yet been set so Joe decided he would
harass her fiancé when they met. Once
Joe found out the fiancé was a Psychiatrist he decided not to harass
him!!!!!!!! As a matter of
fact….no one harassed the fiancé!!!!!!!!!
The
Cape
Gazette
photographer/reporter arrived.
Joe presented the check to Shelly as the fiancé looked on.
She graciously thanked the Club on behalf of Compassionate Care Hospice
and the DJ played on.
I saw Lenny, Otts, Bill, and Marion…and my Bill got there after work
and the 1 hour to get thru Dagsboro in beach traffic.
What a guy! If you were
there and I did not mention you it is because I did not see you….sorry!
You should have said HI to the newsletter editor!
The people voted…the prizes were awarded…and the music played on as
we cleaned up.
As the last contestant pulled off the parking lot it began to drizzle.
Our tasks were done. The
2004 show was over and those of us who worked were exhausted.
Hope YOU will join us for the fun next year!
