************************************************************************  PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a turn out we had for the Highway Clean-Up !  Thanks to all who worked so hard to clean up our portion of Long Neck Road.  30 members was a record breaker!    We had good food and beverages” at Grotto Pizza afterward and I hope everyone got enough to eat and drink.  You all outdid yourselves…thanks!

We have had some real Corvette days in April and early May, and compared to a month ago this weather has got everyone’s enthusiasm up but why does it have to rain every weekend??  I can tell by the sound of orbital buffers and the smell of carnauba wax that car show season is about to start!  C'mon we could have bought any car, but we didn't, we bought America's sports car.  I think car shows give us an excuse to show off our Corvettes anyway.  My C6 is not my daily drive and it has seen rain once in a year.  So, you say, how can this garage queen need cleaning?  Hmmm, you sound like Miriam.  Will somebody please explain to her at the next meeting on June 5th just how it can take a week to clean a Vette that has been in the garage all winter!  We bought the best so we want it to look its best.  While mere mortals wash, wax and maybe throw some Armour All on the tires, we expand on the concept of cleaning - in my case, to the point of an obsessive-compulsive disorder.  The inside has to be as clean as the outside.  Has anybody else here cut their hands while trying to clean the inside of their wheel wells?  Uh huh, you know who you are.  In addition, if anybody has taken their seats out to get the carpet clean, please see me.

So, your car is clean, now you have to drive it.  It is of the utmost importance that you attain a manner and style that is befitting to the Corvette marquee.  Corvette owners realize that they must maintain a certain posture in the community and understand that this is no ordinary car and people expect you to be different.  Some people respect and admire this attitude and yet others continue to harass you for being one of the chosen few.  The correct driving position is looking straight ahead.  Try to ignore all the stares and glances at your clean car and most of all - be cool.

It always feels good to know you're sharing the road with other people who love Corvettes.  Therefore, it is necessary to maintain customs that have been established over the years.  Corvette drivers try to set the highest standards of safety and courtesy on the roads, which will hopefully protect this elite group from extinction.  When you see another Corvette be sure to wave - that is sufficient.  There is no need to honk or blink your lights.  Remember - be cool.

Save the wave!

Scott

PICNIC WITH FIRST STATE CORVETTE CLUB AT

KENT SUSSES INDUSTRIES

SATURDAY MAY 17TH

I have spoken to Bruce Ballard from First State Corvette club.  He says he cannot tell us how much he appreciates the effort we have made to join FSCC at KSI.  With our cars (I have 9 signed up, but we can always take more!), he anticipates 27 Corvettes surprising the kids at KSI.  The surprise is why he wants to meet outside of KSI and drive in at the same time.  Bruce told me that when the staff of KSI asked the kids what they wanted for the picnic they said "to see the Corvettes!"

The picnic is from 10:00 - 12:00.  There will be food there.

Bruce wants to meet at 9:30 just south of Shawnee County Club on South Rehoboth Blvd. in Milford.  We are going to meet at Payless parking lot in Millsboro at 9:00.  From Millsboro, take 113 north to Johnson Rd. (Fitzgerald's is on the corner).  Make a right onto Johnson Rd.  Go through Lincoln.  Take a left on Wilkins Rd. at Macklin Corner.  At the second stop sign, take a left and the Vettes will be lined up on the shoulder of S. Rehoboth Blvd.

If meeting in Millsboro is not convenient for you, from Rehoboth:  Take Route 1 north to the blinking light at the intersection of 1 & Rt. 30.  Take a left at the blinking light.  At the first stop sign, make a right and the Vettes will be on the shoulder of S. Rehoboth Blvd.

GIVE A BIG WAVE TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

REMEMBER…”BE COOL” PER EL PRESIDENTE!

I know you’ve seen that 1989 Torch Red convertible cruising down Route 26 from Frankford!  If you see it again say Hi to new members Andrew and Delores Bulles!  How do you like that new traffic light just outside Dagsboro? YUCK!

And about that 1976 Tan coupe you’ve been seeing around the Bethany/Frankford area!  Your right…new members Thomas and Ruthie Macknight!  Sure to see you in the Route 26 backups this summer!

Then there are new members Harry and Patricia Morrissy who hale from Lincoln and Len and Nancy Carr who call Milford home.   We won’t see them flitting around town as both Harry and Len admit their 1977 and 1987 need repair.  Not an issue in our club.  We’re just happy you joined us other “enthusiasts”.  The ladies…looking forward to meeting you both.

Hey everyone….WELCOME to BEACHCOMBERS!

BEACHCOMBERS CORVETTE CLUB’S

ANNUAL CAR SHOW – AUGUST 16, 2008

On the grounds of 1st State Chevy-Olds

Route 113 – Georgetown, Delaware

Chairman – Bill Shaw – 302-541-4891

First thing I have to do is correct something that was written in last month’s newsletter.  Newsletter Editor (my wife Dianne) was left to her own demise in interpreting my notes and made a boo-boo because I don’t write too clearly.  Sorry everyone!  Our members will not be registering their Corvettes at the 2008 show.  They will not be in the competition and they will not pay any fees.  Our cars will be parked together and on display for show goers to see.  The only cost to a member is if they want to purchase a picture plaque for $10.

If you want to purchase a picture plaque please be mindful that no club pics will be taken the day of the car show.  Members pics will be taken at the June and July club meetings so if you want a picture of you in your car and a plaque to put it in you need to call Joe Schluck at 302-855-0358.  Call Joe and let him know if you want your picture taken at the June or July club meeting.

Thanks to Connie Magee for volunteering to coordinate the Door Prizes.

Many thanks to Michelle Esposito’s for asking her friends and associates to contribute to our LDAF fundraiser car show.  She collected $600 which will go directly to LDAF!  Talk about members who ”Can Do”!

Kudos to Mr. Sponsorship, Jim Willis who is working ardently to EXCEED last year’s sponsor totals...and gathering door prizes along the way!  Not only does this guy have a gift for attaining sponsors…he seems to have a gift for charming 4 computers out of the owner of Bob’s Marine in Clarksville.  These computers will go to the school for the kids.  Bob is having his IT people set everything up.  I know this worthy contribution will be significant for “the kids”.  Live in the Clarksville area and have a boat?...support Bob’s Marine.

MEMBER GETS KA-BOOMED

DAYS LATER HE COMES TO HIGHWAY CLEAN-UP

It has been said “you can’t keep a good man down” and our Doug Riniker is living proof…in living color too!  Earlier in the month Doug took a line drive off  the bat of his Son…KA BOOM! The ball fractured his cheek bone and ricocheted crushing his sinuses, hitting his eye and fracturing his temple.  He was a VERY LUCKY MAN…and very colorful as Cindy described the various stages of bad bruising.  Happily he is recovering nicely and even showed up for the Highway Clean-Up.  Don’t over do it Doug.  Be patient Nurse Cindy!

MEMBER GOES UNDER THE KNIFE

AND COMES OUT KICKING BETTER THAN EVER

Our Fred Chidister is recovering nicely from his March knee replacement surgery … OH…EEEEKKKKK…OWIE!  We hope his therapy has given him a gait that is pain free…or at least moving toward pain free.   Gotta get that knee in tip-top shape Fred!

The ladies are waiting!  Keep up the good work.  We’re pulling for you!

MAY MEETING – 50/50 WINNER  This is not the first time a new member has won the 50/50.  Congrats to Andrew Bullis who won $81!  Hummmm… maybe referring members should be entitled to a recruitment bonus!

*****************************************************************

DOOR  PRIZESThe door prizes was donated by Jack Ruscansky and won by Daphne Blaker.

Remember to bring your donated Door Prize to the club meeting.  Prizes need not be auto or Corvette related.  Prizes should be usable and not excessive in price…unless you want to.

THE CLUB SENDS ITS SYMPATHY

AS MEMBERS MOURN THEIR LOSSES

At publication members Rose and Eric Leister are in Maryland making arrangements for the funeral of Eric’s Mother.  Her death was unexpected so reality is difficult to grasp at this time.  Please join me in prayer for strength and acceptance for them and deliverance for her.

Earlier this month members Connie and Don Magee had an opportunity for a last visit and final “goodbye” to Don’s Step Mother.  Though her death was a blessing it does not lessen the loss.  May God speed her return home as we pray for them.

Remember our members and their families in their time of need.  Blessings!

CLUB HATS - Member Doc Romansoff can take your order for our club hats.  They are available in an array of colors and a bargain at $11!  See Doc at the meeting.

CLUB NAME TAGS – The purchase of name tags is encouraged for all members.  Not only do they help us get to know each other’s names but they are great during club sponsored events.  Need one?  See Connie Magee.  Cost is $6 per tag. She’ll need your name and city.

CLUB SHIRTS   A shirt order was placed on Friday, May 16th.  It is not too late to get your order in this time around.  Want a shirt?  Call Dianne right away to be included on the current order.  The more shirts ordered the lower the cost.  Ladies and men’s official club shirts are ordered through Dianne Shaw.  Men’s shirts come in sizes Small to 3X and are available in French Blue, Forest Green, Stone, Dill, Butter, Red, Heather Grey, Black, Navy, and White.  Ladies shirts comes in sizes Small to 2XL and are available in Black, French Blue, Stone, Light Blue, Butter, Pink, Lavender, Navy, and White.  All shirts have contrasting color trim.  Prices range from $24 to $28 plus about $7 for embroidery of club logo on left breast.  See Dianne at the meeting or E-mail her at zinykake@aol.com or call her at (302) 541-4891.

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 in the State Room of the Heritage Inn and Golf Club by President Scott Clapper followed by the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

The secretary’s report was approved.

The treasurer’s report was given by Jim Willis.  Buddy Clark made motion to approve and Bill Shaw seconded.

New members:  VP Wayne Esposito presented applications for memberships for Andrew and Delores Bullis, Len Carr, Henry Morrisey, and Thomas and Ruthie MacKnight.  Bill Shaw made a motion to approve the memberships and Rich Brown seconded.  The membership voted to accept the applications.

Jim Willis reported the photos from bowling and the cruise to Kent Island have been added to the book.

Activities:  We will meet at the Wilmington Trust on Rt 24 & Long Neck Rd on Tuesday 05/06 at 6 p.m. for the highway cleanup.  Grotto’s will be providing pizza.  There is a sign up sheet at the door.

Carolyn said there is nothing new at this time for activities.

Bill Vernon reported on the cruise to Kent Island for lunch at the Harris Crab House with the Baltimore Cobra Club.  Everyone had a great lunch in spite of the torrential downpours and the water rising in the parking lot.  The Cobra Club (most of whom had no tops) fared far worse especially since the rain continued on their way home.

Connie’s son’s girlfriend ran in the ½ marathon on 04/27 to benefit LDAF.  She represented our club and finished 3rd.  The sign for the mile marker we purchased looked good.

Car show:  Bill Shaw thanked all the volunteer chairpersons.  There will be a signup sheet at the next meeting for everyone to sign up for blocks of time to work.  It was noted that none of our cars can be judged.  Bill will ask for a separate parking area for our cars.  The fee for club members to receive a plaque and photo is $10.  The photos will be taken at the June and July meetings.  Call Joe Schluck to schedule your photo.

Joe Schluck called the phone numbers on various car products and solicited donations.  Turtle Wax has donated 200 samples and several other companies have indicated they may make donations if further information is provided.

Connie read the letter Jim Willis sent to Oprah asking her to contact Dell Computers on our behalf for donations of computers for LDAF.

Scott will contact the Jamie MacMurray Foundation for a possible donation.  Autism Speaks is featured on his car during some NASCAR races.

Jim reported on sponsors for the car show.  Michelle Esposito has collected $600 in sponsors.  To date, Jim has 11 new sponsors for a total of 41 and $1300.  Door prizes are still needed.  Bob’s Marina on Rt 17 has donated 4 computers.

There are letters available for car show sponsors and door prizes.

Sickness or Distress  Diane reported Doug Riniker was badly injured by a baseball to the face.  He has a crushed jaw and an injured eye.

Connie received a letter from Fred Chidister  who had a total knee replacement in March.  He hopes to be back soon.

Connie still has a few cling banners available for $16.50.

Trivia:   The trivia quiz was won by Bill Vernon.  The prize was a mystery bag.

Door Prize:  The door prize was donated by Jack Ruscanski and won by Daphne Blaker.
