EL PRESIDENTE’S MESSAGE

The car show is over!

What an effort by 48 of the Beachcombers finest members.  On Saturday, August 16, the Beachcombers car show came to pass.  Planning for the show started in the spring of this year.  Car Show Committee Chairman Bill Shaw had each of the section chairs meet at his and Dianne’s house to review last year’s show.  Joe Schluck’s copious notes from our 2007 show provided valuable data to improve this year’s event.

This year’s registration process, led by Registration Chair Joe Schluck, was simplified and was a breeze compared to last year.  Henry the Deuce could not have had a better assembly line than the photography duo of photographer Violet Chilcoat & photo printer Jack Casto.  Cochairman, Jim Carr, and Bill Shaw had the set-up team hopping early.  By the time I got to the show at 6:30am the banners were already up along the road, the registration tent was up, and the Food Chair, Dianne Shaw, had the serving tables assembled.  Hey Jim, can I borrow that whip you must have used?

A previous night’s rain shower forecast kept the early morning registrants away.  Once the sun came out and the Weather Channel abolished fears of rain, the cars started pouring in.  With the cars rolling in, the Parking Chair, Jim Willis sprung into action.  OK, we all know Jim; he didn’t “spring” into action.  Well, let’s face it; our Historian doesn’t spring into anything any more.  His parking team did keep the cars moving.  There was never a back up of cars waiting to park.  More to Jim’s credit, THERE WERE NOT ANY PARKING ACCIDENTS.  By the end of registration, we had 92 cars and 1 motorcycle.  With the previous night’s threat of rain, tough economic conditions, and gas prices higher than Connie after a bottle of Chardonnay all stacked against us, we did admirably.

Altogether, 48 members pitched in from 6:00 in the morning to well after clean-up was finished in the late afternoon.  I am very proud of those 48.  So many of those 48 saw something that needed done and did it.  From Steve Brooks repairing our banners and making a food queuing system to Violet using her own camera to Georgia donating a turkey fryer – a.k.a. hot dog cooker to Joe’s handmade vote tally board… and the list goes on.  It was just super.

I have gross car show dollar figures from our Treasurer Debbie Willis.  Debbie is sharpening her pencil and calculating a net profit.  The Board of Officers will use that information; our current balance; plus 1st State Chevy’s donation and determine an amount available for charitable donations.  We have three donations we would like to make.  1) The Millville fire hall lent us 12 tables that we would have otherwise had to rent.  2) Two Delaware State Police troopers helped traffic control on Route 113.  We would like to contribute to a trooper-supported charity.  Finally, I am confident we will make the club’s largest donation in its history to the Lower Delaware Autism Foundation.  I will present these figures at the September meeting.

Ah yes, the topic we love/hate to talk about – next year’s show.  For now, while we are still over dosing on this year’s show, please email me (sclap@yahoo.com) your suggestions and comments for next year’s show while they are fresh in your minds.  I will save all of your emails for the next Car Show Committee Chairman.  After the first of the year, we will meet to constructively analyze the show.

SAVE THE WAVE – START WITH OUR NEW MEMBERS

Have a wave ready when you pull into the Dairy Queen in Millsboro!  Rumor has it that our Jerry Smith can often be found there in his 1993 Black ZR1 enjoying a Hot Fudge Chocolate sundae with cherries and wet nuts…YAHOO!

Was driving behind a 1992 White Coupe the other night and was beaten out of a parking place in front of Nicola Pizza in Rehoboth Beach.  I was a little miffed until I realized it was Dawn and Denny Huss…save the wave!

We’re so happy to have you all with us.  Sometimes meetings can be a little overwhelming … please don’t let that happen.  Stop any of us and ask questions.  You’re a part of us now!

BEACHCOMBERS CORVETTE CLUB’S ANNUAL CAR SHOW  ON AUGUST 16, 2008…was a great success thanks to the support of our members.  My committee chairs and co-chairs went beyond the extra mile and you will never understand what that means to a Car Show Chairman…until YOU chair the show!

I arrived at 6:30 a.m. to find tables set up and tents pitched and from there everything fell into place and by 8:00 a.m. it was SHOWTIME!

Registration functioned like a well-oiled machine with our experienced crew and methodical procedures.  The food concession benefitted greatly from its new set up; guide posts for customer flow; and a dedicated cashier.

The show always brings out the usual dedicated members whose work is immeasurable from constructing things way prior to the show; acquiring sponsors and door prizes; ordering plaques; soliciting for food donations; typing; making telephone calls; organizing; and picking up supplies to working the day of the show.   Each year I’m uplifted by seeing some of our newer members show up and perform duties from set up to assisting in the photo process to directing traffic to serving food and sodas to cleaning up and just assisting in any way they were needed …including  our in-house DJ!

We did GOOD and Scott’s report on the Car Show will “bowl you over”!  Thanks EVERYONE!

Bill

CORVETTE  TRIVIA  GOES UNCONTESTED

The usual bevy of contestants took pen in hand and drew their little circles on the challenge sheet despite knowing El Presidente August prize was non-alcoholic!  The level of Corvette trivia expertise within the club continued to be matched head to head until members fell to the wayside one by one.  In the end…only the truly knowledgeable stood above all others.  TA  DAAAAAAA … congrats to Lee Repass…our 5 Vette Man!  Better that than the 60 second man!!!!!

IS YOUR CORVETTE AVAILABLE

FOR UPCOMING FALL AND WINTER PARADES

AND HOMECOMING CELEBRATIONS?

Quite often local schools, organizations, and PR personnel for local pageant winners will contact our club seeking cars and drivers to carry individuals in parades or celebrations.  Most often they are on Friday or Saturday evenings in our general area.  Their preference is usually a convertible (for better visibility of the “celebrity”).  Staring with the September meeting we will make a list of volunteers for this activity.  A list will be passed around or you can see Janet Smith at the meeting or call her at 537-1207.
