Vice President              Doug Riniker

Secretary                      Lana Wesley

 Sergeant-At- Arms      Cindy Riniker

Thanks also to the following key people who will be sticking around for 2008.

Newsletter Editor         Dianne Shaw – continuing in 2008

Webmaster                   Jack Casto – continuing in 2008

Historian                      Jim Willis – continuing in 2008

Activities Chair            Carolyn Brinker – continuing in 2008

My name is Scott Clapper and I am a native Delawarean.  I was born in New Castle County, live in Sussex, and work in Kent.  My dad worked for GM at the Wilmington Boxwood Road plant so I was introduced to cars at a very early age.  I was probably the only first grader with grease under my finger nails.  Cars led me to things mechanical in general and that led me to a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Delaware.  After college I went to work in the power generation industry spending the bulk of my career at Indian River Power Plant but always kept my interest in cars.  I left the plant in 2001 as Maintenance Manager and took a job with the state.  I am now officially the state’s biggest car person because now I am Clean Air Administrator and Chief of Vehicle Services for the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles.  Our new Director takes me to meetings with her because she says I speak “car.”

My better half is Miriam Targonski.  Miriam has been able to put up with me for the past nine years.  Miriam is Director of Guidance at Sussex Central High School.  Miriam has a daughter Camille who likes Corvettes but for right now is doing a good job keeping her Mazda 3 washed and clean.  Say hello to Camille when the hostess at Mango Mike’s seats you.

I am new to the world of Corvettes but love it so far.  Besides my black ’07 Z51 coupe that I have now, I have owned an ’83 Porsche 928S, a couple of 240Z’s, a 1970 Camaro, and a ’68 Ford Fairlane convertible that we appropriately called “El Junk.”  I drag raced the Porsche one summer with friends from work.  My friends had bought an old Delmarva Power pickup truck at auction and tried to make a racer out of it.  Its body was in poor condition, to say the least, and they spray painted “Sanford and Son” on the door.  The two vehicles parked beside each other made quite the comical picture in the pits.  But the common denominator of cars and racing brought us all together.

I see our Corvettes doing the same thing – a common interest bringing together diverse people to have fun, support each other, and help our community.

Scott

CAR SHOW KICK-OFF MEETING BRINGS

NEW IDEAS AND

HANDS AND HEADS ARE SET IN MOTION

Thanks to everyone who attended the Car Show Kick-Off meeting.  Joe Schluck started right in with his “observation notes” from the 2007 show and we moved from one topic to another resolving issues as we went along.

Member Jack Casto is heading up the photography and picture printing operation and we will be formulating that area once Jack gets back in town and meets with us in May.  We have a committee of well versed members lined up to help him.  We even have new member Violet Chilcoat stepping up to lend him a hand with her Camera Club experience.   Member Jim Carr has offered to contribute an additional camera to the club to insure for necessary back up.  It is likely we will have a special meeting just to allow Jack to get together with his volunteers and the Chairs and set forth his plans.

We talked about different topics relating to our members.  We want our members to be available to help out on Car Show day without missing out on anything.  What we decided is that members would park their cars in a specific spot on the parking lot to free up more lawn space.  They would use their new windshield club signs and would pay to register their cars but their cars would not be in competition.  Basically your money is a contribution.   Club members will not be eligible for door prizes.  Club members will receive their picture and plaques if they want one.  To get their picture in a plaque they will have to drive their Corvette to either the June or July regular monthly meeting.  Their picture in the car will be taken then and you will receive your picture and plaque the day of the show.  Members who want pictures and plaques will have to call Joe Schluck at 302-855-9358 and let him know which month (June or July regular monthly meeting) they want their picture taken.  We will not have a time until we check with Jack Casto but it is likely to be around 5:15-5:30 p.m. on the day of the meeting.

Dianne is going to do Food and Beverage concessions again and that area is going to be set up a little differently.   She’ll be doing specific table placements for servicing patrons and providing condiments and beverages.   We’re going to put up rope barriers to move patrons from station to station ending with the Cashier.  She will be there in the morning for table and barrier placement so if you are there too please do not make any changes unless you check with her.   We will be doing Italian meatball hoagies, plain hot dogs, large muffins, scrapple sandwiches, chips, cookies, and beverages.  This year we will also add watermelon slices.  Be on the look out for sign up sheets to work concessions, cook scrapple, chop onions etc.    Want  to donate a watermelon?

Registration is being chaired by Joe Schluck and he’ll also be heading up vote tallies.  He’s made some updates to forms and procedures and he’ll be meeting with his volunteers so they are on top of everything.  A lot of things will be put together in package form.

All registering contestants will get pictures and plaques.  They will also receive a Door Prize ticket.

We had a lengthy discussion about how to park the contestants cars.  While the ideal would be to park each Class separately it just will not work…people want to sit and park next to friends and you just project class participation numbers.  Parking will be done as in the past.

Member Cindy Riniker will take care of the 50/50 raffle and we’re hoping her usual partner, Linda Casto, will join her.

We need one or two members to handle the Door Prize raffle.  These members WILL NOT BE  responsible for getting the door prizes.  I want them to set up the table to display the Door Prizes; number each door prize; see to the drawing of the numbers; announce the numbers and post them on the board we will supply.   They will also be responsible for insuring the winner gets the right numbered prize.  First number drawn gets prize # 1…second number drawn get prize # 2 yada yada yada.  Interested is doing this?  See me or Dianne.

Thanks for all your support

Bill
