UPCOMING MEETINGS

MARCH 6TH , APRIL 3RD, AND MAY 1ST

In

The State Room of the Heritage Inn & Golf Club

Highway One, Lewes, Delaware

Behind Bob Evans

302-644-0600

Reservations required by Monday, March 3rd .  Please call Sharon Ruscansky at 302-945-6658 or E-mail her at Sharrus@verizon.net

The club has entered into an agreement with the Heritage Inn to host the next three club meetings as stated above.  We have sole use of the dining room for the evening.  Socialization will begin at 6 p.m. with a buffet from 6:15 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. and the business meeting at 7:30 p.m.  Members who choose not to partake of the buffet are welcome as always for the meeting.  When facing the Inn, The State Room is located at the far right of the building or you can enter through the main doors of the Inn.

Each meeting will feature a buffet with a salad, at least two entrées, two vegetables, rolls and butter, coffee, hot tea, and iced tea.  We will have an opportunity to do “special” nights such as Mexican night, Italian night etc. An open cash bar is available.  Fountain soda is not included in the buffet cost.   Buffet cost is $20 per person and includes the gratuity.  You will pay the hostess as you enter the dining room.  They do accept credit cards.

The Inn hosted our February meeting and it was a great success.  The buffet featured Caesar salad, hot roast beef and gravy, chicken marsala, penne pasta with marinara or alfredo sauce, roasted red potatoes, steamed mixed vegetables, rolls, dessert, coffee, hot tea, and iced tea. The food was good and plentiful.   The room is large and nicely decorated.  There is a PA system for the President and speakers.  All tables seat 6 and there is no assigned seating.  There is a lovely outdoor pergola covered courtyard which can be used in warmer weather if we decide to continue meeting there.  The Inn is also interested in hosting a “event” such as Corvettes in Lewes…where we could invite local clubs to join us for a special get together and put our Vettes on display.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Brrr  As I write this message the cold weather is upon us again and I do not like it.  This time last year I was in St. Thomas and I wish I was back there at the moment.  As soon as the weather warms up we can start with our “cruisin” and I am looking forward to that.

The February meeting was great at our new place, the Heritage Inn; the food was delicious, the space was great, and I think everyone could hear me.  We are going to sign a contract for three months and we will decide again at that time whether to continue there or not.  I think we really do not have a choice if we want to continue to have a dinner meeting.  I want to personally thank Sharon Ruscansky for volunteering to coordinate the meetings with the Heritage Inn, so please make sure you contact Sharon by phone or e-mail to let her know of your attendance.

We finally have a full slate of officers for the coming year.  We only have one position to be voted on and a ballot will be handed out at the next meeting.  A ballot will be attached to this newsletter for you to vote if you feel you will not be attending the next meeting.  Please vote and send in as soon as you can.

Stay warm and see you in March.

Connie

BEACHCOMBERS WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

WOW!  WHAT AN ORGANIZATION WE ARE BECOMING!

WE’ RE SO HAPPY YOU’VE JOINED US!

This is our first newsletter since November so there’s some catching up to be done.  In January we welcomed Walt and Daphne Blaker.  They hail from the Lewes area so if you see a 2008 Red Coupe flying down Highway One just give a wave.  Also joining us in January was Sharyn Luzier from Millsboro.  She sports around in a 2004 Lemans Blue Coupe so give shout out to her too.

February brought more new members starting with Rick and Rachel Beach who call Millsboro home.  They have a 1970 Marlboro Maroon Coupe.  Is this our first Maroon Vette?  Then there’s Tom and Shirley Conley from up north in Milton.  They have a 2007 Lemans Blue Convertible so be on the lookout for them.  We round out the month with Jerry and Luan Mundell who hail from Millsboro in their 2005 Black Coupe.

Join me in a big Beachcombers welcome to our new members…a smile and a wave!

BEACHCOMBERS’ CHRISTMAS TREE

REEPS DOLLARS FOR

MEALS ON WHEELS OF SOUTHERN DELAWARE

Each year members gather at the Grotto Pizza restaurant on Long Neck Road on the designated night to kick off the holiday season by decorating a Christmas tree and designating a charity to receive the money our tree raises.  Our tree is a wonderful display of Corvette miniatures and related decorations brightly lit by hundreds of white lights.  Our 2008 tree raised money for Meals on Wheels to the tune of $201.27.  We thank Grotto for giving us this opportunity and also for providing a nice YUMMY party the night we decorated.

CHARITY TO BE SELECTED

CLUB ASKS MEMBERS TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS

The kick off meeting for our August 16th Car Show is just around the corner.  The tantamount task for now is naming the charity that will reap the benefits of our labors that day.  During the March and April meetings members will have time to make verbal presentations about local charities that they think could greatly benefit from being named the charity we’ll raise money for during our Car Show.    We’ll need the name and address of the Organization, name and telephone number of a point of contact, statement on the mission and goals of the organization, and a statement on why you believe this organization should be selected.

************************************************************************

FEBRUARY MEETING – 50/50 WINNER - Congrats to Marie Zwirz who left the meeting with an additional $66.00  in her pocket.

THE CAR SIGNS ARE COMING

THEY’RE COMING REAL SOON

Joe Schluck’s brainstorming has brought great tiding to our club yet again…this time in the form of signs for our cars.  The round shape will be enhanced by boldly lined borders surrounding the club’s insignia.  You EXCLAIM…signs on my Corvette…I think NOT!  But wait!  Joe showed us a strip of the material that will be used in the sign.  He explained how he placed it on one of his vehicles then pealed it off and placed it on another without leaving a residue on the vehicle nor damaging the material.   Members agreed to try the sign so they’ll order some for distribution to members.

EVER HAD A DREAM?

EVER TAKE STEPS TO MAKE IT COME TRUE?

Beachcombers member Linda Casto made her dream a reality and now she’s going to Disneyworld!  Really!

My childhood dream - become a baton twirler!  I had the dollar baton with the tassels on each end.  I did what I thought was twirling…marching came easily but I was far from a pro.  The years were passing and all too quickly so I put the twirling dream in my memory bank choosing to devote all my time to studying in order to become a teacher.   That dream was realized but my twirling remained a dream...UNTIL…

In February, 2004 I discovered The Villages Twirlers (Linda and husband Jack live in the Villages in Florida) performing at the St. Patrick's Day Parade.  I was astonished and impressed with the ability of these older women.  I thought THESE are Senior Citizens?  These are retirees?  I could not believe my eyes but I immediately knew I had to find out more.

The Lifelong Learning College Expo offered Twirling and that’s where I began my instruction.  I was fitted for my baton and learned to hold it like a pencil.  Did you know a baton has parts?  The ball...the tip…and the shaft!  My progression took me into figure eights then learning to slip the baton through each finger followed by tossing it in the air and throwing it under my left leg.  I’ve been doing this and much more for three years now and I still nod my head in disbelief of my ability.

Were doing about ten parades a year as well as shows for local groups and charitable events.    Our twirling group has won trophies and the Show Team has actually been paid for our performances.  This summer my Twirling Captain, Ann Pelle, was called by the Chairman of an event that is held each year at Disney World in Orlando, Florida known as Twirl Mania to ask our Show Team, Parade Corps, Drum Corps, Flag Corps and Banner Corps to come to Disney World on February 15 to parade in the Elite Group of Twirlers at the Spectrum Light Parade, marching down Main Street at 7:30 P.M. that night.  On February 16 at the Sports Arena The Villages Show Team that I am a member of will perform a patriotic routine known as Dallas.  On the evening of February 18 The Villages Show Team will perform at MGM Studios on the Raiders of the Lost Ark stage to open the Awards Ceremony for Twirl Mania.  On the Show Team I am a ribbon twirler, but as a member of the Parade Corps I twirl a baton, a light stick as well as a flag baton.

Twirling has become my passion.  I practice a lot and still take formal classes.  My instructor is 70 years old, but you would never believe it.  The youngest twirler in my group is 54 years old and the oldest twirler in The Villages is 80 years old and she is still taking Twirling classes!

It is never too late to realize a dream, especially when you live in The Villages.  The Villages is the Fountain of Youth and I feel honored to be one of The Villages Twirlers.   If you want to learn more about the events I am involved in as a twirler please click on the website below:

                            http://www.thevillagestwirlers.com

As a twirler our motto and theme song before a show is "Girls Just Want to Have Fun!" and the fun I am having can't be described in this short story about my life as a twirler.  Performing in Disney World is another dream come true!  The number of times I visited Disney World as a child and as an adult I was always curious about performing at Disney or parading there someday, but little did I know that my twirling would take me to Disney to actually be a performer at an International Championship Event.  Dreams do come true but you have to make it happen.

Ironically, the Beachcombers Corvette members have something in common with The Villages Twirlers Captain, Ann Pelle.  She and her husband, Mike, own a beautiful 2006 Le Mans Blue Corvette and are members of The Villages Corvette Club here in Florida.

So remember…dreams really can come true!                    Linda Casto..twirling aficionado!

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 at the Heritage Inn and Golf Club State Room.

The secretary’s report was approved. Bill Shaw made the motion to accept.  Joe Schluck seconded the motion.

The treasurer’s report was given by President Connie Magee.  Jack Ruscansky made the motion to accept.  Bill Shaw seconded the motion.

New Members: Doug Riniker presented applications for membership for Jerry and Luan Mundell, Phil and Rachel Beach and Tom and Shirley Conley. The membership voted to accept the applications.  Doug welcomed the new members.

Activities: Carolyn Brinker announced that she had booked the Lighthouse for the Christmas Party on Saturday December 1.  She has not sent the deposit and the reservation can be cancelled if another place is found.

The highway cleanup was discussed.  The membership decided to do it on Tuesday May 6 on Long Neck Road.  Grotto’s will provide pizza.

President Connie Magee stated she had received a letter from DelDot that we would need to sign a release in order to continue this project releasing DelDot of responsibility in case of an accident.  She also said that DelDot would be providing new vests and that we could specify sizes.  The membership decided to order all vests in size XL in order to keep the confusion down.

The release form was passed around.

Bill Vernon announced that there was a car auction on Saturday in Ocean City.  He invited any one interested in attending to meet at his office on Rte. 1 at 10:30 am.  They will then drive to General’s Kitchen on 73rd St. in Ocean City for breakfast.  There will be stop at the totem pole in Bethany for those from that area.

Buddy Clark said that the auction was for muscle cars and classics and that it is held at the Convention Center.

President Connie Magee requested suggestions for activities.  Scott Clapper suggested a cruise to the DuPont Museum.  Connie suggested Harrington Raceway or Ocean Downs.  Other suggestions were bowling and a trip to the Linganore Winery near Mt. Airy Maryland.  It was requested that any suggestions be given to Carolyn Brinker.

Report of Sickness and Distress: Dianne Shaw reported no know illnesses or distress.

Connie Magee thanked all for their cards, calls and concern about Don’s recent illness.

Unfinished Business: It was reported that we received $201.27 from the tree trimming at Grotto’s.  This money was donated to Make a Wish.

The Christmas Party location was discussed at this time.  Doug Riniker has checked Baywood Gold Club.  They cannot accommodate us.  He also checked with Irish Eyes on the canal and found that they were too expensive.  Dianne Shaw suggested we have our party in the State Room where we are meeting this month.  She will check with the manager to see if that is possible.

President Connie Magee states that the club received a nice card from Miss Delaware thanking the club for driving her in the various Christmas parades.

The 2009 50th Anniversary Cruise to the Corvette Museum in Nashville was discussed. This project is still being worked on.  Janet and Lew Smith have a lot of information.  Some hotels have been looked into. George Stadler suggested that the place to stay is the Holiday Inn.  It is near the museum and most of the functions are taking place there.  Reservations cannot be made until September 2008. A paper was passed around for those interested to sign up.

Carolyn Brinker said that we are already registered to participate in the festivities.  She will bring the information to the next meeting.

Nominations:  Pres: Joe Schluck; Vice President: Rich Brown, Wayne Esposito; Secretary: Cathy Schlossnagle; Treasurer: Deb Willis; Historian: Jim Willis; Sergeant at Arms: Michelle Esposito; Activities: Carolyn Brinker.  Dianne Shaw will continue to do the newsletter.  The vote will take place next month.

Meeting places were discussed.  All agreed that this (State Room at the Heritage Inn and Golf Club) was an excellent place.  The buffet was good and the room meets our needs.  Connie stated that the management can accommodate us every 1st Thursday for a year.  The manager is willing to do extras for us and to work with us.  We have to sign contracts in 3 month intervals.  A motion was made and seconded to sign the contract for 3 months.

President Connie Magee asked for a volunteer to work with the management to co-ordinate the meeting place.  Sharon Ruscansky volunteered to do this.  It is imperative that those planning to attend the meeting contact Sharon prior to the meeting so that she may give a head count to the manager.

It was announced that name tags are $6.00 and that Dianne orders the shirts.

Bill Shaw has agreed to chair the care show this year.

Joe Schluck suggested an addition to the bylaws describing honorary members.  It was felt that an addition to the bylaws was not needed as we do not have honorary members.  It was also felt that if a non-member provides a service to the club, the non-member could be invited as a guest to a club function.

Joe Schluck showed a decal he had received.  It is a peel off decal that leaves no residue.  He had used the same one on his vehicles to test it.  The club logo can be made into this type decal.  He said they would be 3” in diameter and the cost is $80.00 for 100.  Connie made a motion to purchase.  The motion was seconded.  She also suggested that each member would be given the first decal and could purchase more.  Buddy Clark suggested that more than 100 be ordered.  Joe will check to see it there is any difference in price.

President Connie Magee announced that we may need a registered agent for our corporation.  Rick Berry is now the registered agent but she does not know if he will continue.  She will check with him.   In the meantime she asked for a volunteer.  Michelle Esposito will do it if Rick does not wish to continue.

Connie announced that June 30 is the National Day of recognition for the Corvette.  She suggested we contact our congressman to get a resolution passed.  Joe Schluck suggested a letter for everyone to sign.  Dianne Shaw will put the letter together.

Connie said the dates for the Carlyle Show are August 22-23.  We need to talk about it as a club.

Trivia was won by Wayne Esposito.

Door prizes were donated by Sharon Vernon and Wayne Esposito.  They were won by Dianne Shaw and George Stadler.

The total for the 50/50 was 132.00.  Maria Zwirz won.

The meeting was adjourned.
