VOLUME . 9                                                                                   ISSUE NO.   1

The meetings of  June 7th will be held at

DOYLE’S RESTAURANT – RT 113 – SELBYVILLE, DE

(302) 436-2112

Doyle’s features Eastern Shore “home” cooking with soups, salads, steaks, chops, liver, poultry, seafood, and pasta selections

Socializing and dining from 6:00 p.m.  Meeting at 7:30 P.M.

We’re spoiled…it just didn’t work out at LaRosa Negra!  I do so appreciate everyone’s understanding with the buffet last month.  We did have trouble in that there was supposed to be food for 37 who had said they were partaking of the buffet.  We were invited to return for seconds yet 2 members didn’t get to eat from the buffet and had to order from the menu.  We had to pay for 37 meals but did not collect money for 37 meals so the club had to pay the difference.  That’s is why we are at Doyle’s.  We will vote at the June meeting whether to stay at Doyle’s or go to Bonanza or maybe the Pizza Palace in Georgetown if the remodeling is completed.

Do you have a meeting location suggestion?  We need a restaurant that will accommodate 40-50 of us and provide a space where we can have a meeting.  One big thing we like is the ability to pay with separate checks and order from the menu.  Know some place?  Contact them and see if they are willing to do what we want.  Get the name and telephone number of a contact person then present the info at our meeting or call Dianne Shaw (302-541-4891).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Well, I made it through the first meeting even though I was a little nervous!!  We have such a great group of members and to date we have 79 and seem to be growing all the time.  I guess we are doing something right, even getting some younger blood with Will and Amy.

We recently had several activities: our “Mystery Cruise”, our trip to the Ronald McDonald House and the OC Jamboree.   I think everyone who participated had a great time.  I would especially like to thank Carolyn for all her hard work in planning our activities.  She does a great job!

Our car show is coming up in August and really involves a lot of work and planning.  I hope everyone will pitch in and help.

I personally want to thank Buddy and all the officers for the great job they did last year.  Hopefully we can continue to do as well this year with everybody’s help once again

Connie

YOU DID JUST GREAT CONNIE.  IT WAS AN AMBITIOUS AGENDA AND YOU STILL ENDED THE MEETING AT A REASONABLE TIME!  LOVE YA!

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CRUISE  -  APRIL 28, 2007

C.P. Diver was happy to welcome us to their parking lot….our meeting place!  Two hours later we arrived at an impressive brick structure in a rolling hilled area just down the road from the gates of  DuPont’s Children’s Hospital.  A crew of volunteers was outside sprucing up the gardens and laying mulch as we parked our Vettes and one lone pick-up truck driven by Jim Willis which was carrying a “loaded to capacity” bunch of items from the House’s Wish List.  When the house manager looked at the truck full of items she openly expressed her appreciation of the generosity of our members!  Kudos to all of you!  We were a little disappointed that children and families could not be taken for rides in the Vettes but the squeals of excitement from the children as they climbed in an out of the cars and sat behind the steering wheels beeping horns at each other made up for it.  They even got up into Jim’s “big twuck” as one child described it.  We had plenty of food and families were still enjoying the buffet as we waved “good bye”.  The visit was very special and made us realize once again…we are blessed to be able to conduct such an event.  We at Beachcombers are good people!

WE SNAPPED OUR FINGERS AND CLAPPED OUR HANDS

THE ONLY THING MISSING – OUR CIGARETTE LIGHTERS

The house lights dimmed as “The Legends” bolted through the side door and took the stage for a night of rock and roll entertainment that took us back in time…to the good ole days!  Thanks to Activities Coordinator Carolyn Brinker it was another successful outing!  The fun really began about 30 minutes into the program when they tried to get Janet Smith up on stage.  Lew kept encouraging her but it never happened.  We got to meet Tom Mulcare’s better half, Kathy and had an opportunity to get to know Bill and Maria Zwirz a little better.  Jack and Linda Casto were pretty quiet in their participation but we couldn’t keep Doug & Cindy Riniker out of the aisles.  We finally gave Doc Romansoff a new lens for his eyeglasses and Barbara looked on approvingly.  Eric and Rose Leister clearly had a good time singing along to all the tunes they recognized.  We tried to get Tom Brinker to buy a beanie hat with a crab on top but Carolyn kept him in line…or was it us she kept in line.  Connie kept saying she didn’t recognize any of the songs (she claims she is younger than many of us!)  but that didn’t stop her from chair dancing…NO not lap dancing!  Either way…Don smiled broadly.  Me and Bill…we recognized every song…especially those from our younger days in Ocean City…”Under the Boardwalk”.  A great time was had by all.  Wish you were there.

Beachcombers Corvette Club of Southern Delaware, Inc.

 Meeting  -  May 3, 2007

Prior to the meeting President Connie Magee called for a meeting of the Executive Committee to discuss some items to be brought to the meeting.  In attendance were, Connie Magee, Buddy Clark, Dianne Shaw, Doug Riniker, Cindy Riniker, and Lana Wesley.

Connie stated that we will have to change the bylaws because we are now incorporated.  The bylaws will reflect that.  She asked that we all look them over to see if anything else needed to be changed.

Car show food

Dianne Shaw reported that the ‘Dog House’ multifunction food cart was no longer available for the car show as it was on contract to Lowe’s.  She said the owner did offer that he had steam operated cart that he would rent to us for $50.00.  This was turned down as we have the ability do this type of cooking ourselves.

Jim Willis said that ‘Touch of Italy’ bakery offered to supply their very excellent muffins either as a donation or at a good price.  Jim will talk with her again to get final details.

The discussion then turned to the menu for the car show.  Several things were suggested including egg/scrapple sandwiches, barbeque, and polish sausage.  Buddy Clark reminded the committee that we needed space to do each different thing.  Connie suggested the following menu for the car show –muffins and scrapple sandwiches in the morning; for the afternoon, hot dogs with sauerkraut and meatball sandwiches.  The committee agreed.

Meeting place

Dianne Shaw said that doing a buffet presented many problems.  She had to give the restaurant (La Rosa Negra) a head count.  If someone did not come to the meeting, the club was responsible to pay for them or go back to the member for their portion of the bill.  She also said she had to call several of the members to see if they were going to attend.  Dianne felt the buffet was a lot of work and would cause problems.  She had checked with Doyle’s restaurant and they can accommodate the club.  We will be able to order from the menu and get separate bills.  She also reminded us that we can go to Bonanza.  They can also accommodate the club.  She will check further.

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 Pm at La Rosa Negra.

Officer’s Reports

Secretary—the minutes from last months meeting were approved.

Treasurer-Jim Willis gave the treasurer’s report in Debbie Willis’ absence.  The report was accepted.

Vice President-Doug Riniker submitted applications for membership from Jim and Ada Carr, Scott Clapper, Steve Martin, Jeffrey Martin and Jackie Martin.  Bill Shaw made the motion to accept the applications.  Jim Willis seconded the motion.  The applications were accepted.

Activities-Jim Willis announced that a fine time was had by all at the Ronald McDonald on April 28.  He presented the “Lady in Red” with a picture of her and Ronald McDonald. The food was good and the children  enjoyed being in and riding in the many Corvettes driven to the event.

Carolyn Brinker reminded everyone that the OC Jamboree will the next night. (Friday) She stated she had 5 tickets left.  The show will begin at 7PM and attendees should meet at the Jamboree at 6:15.

Tuesday May 29 is the date the Club will clean up a portion of Long Neck Road for the Adopt a Highway program.  Participants are to meet at the Wilmington Trust at the corner of rte 24 and Long Neck Road.  After the clean up we will go to Grottos.

June 30 is the Shorebirds game.

Buddy Clark spoke on the car show in August.  Five sub committees have been formed each with responsibilities for different parts of the show.  A sign up list will be sent around for volunteers.  The registration desk will need more help than in the past.  Randy Goodlett will need help with pictures.  There is always something to do.  He urged all to sign up.

Dianne Shaw presented the menu decided upon by the executive committee; muffins and scrapple sandwiches, hot dogs, chili and sauerkraut for the hot dogs and meatball sandwiches.  The membership was in agreement with this menu.

Bill Shaw offered that the car show was our biggest fund raiser and our charity this year is the Children’s Beach House of Lewes.

Jim Willis has gotten many sponsors by canvassing the southern end of the county from Rte. 113 to rte 26, rte 1 and rte 54.  The rest of the area is wide open and all were asked to try to get sponsors.  Jim Willis has almost doubled the number of sponsors he got last year.

We also need door prizes from local business such as car washes, lubes, groceries, gift certificates etc.

This year sponsor’s names will be listed on a “Sponsor List” as well as in publications about the car show.  Every participant in the car show will be given a list and any publications.  We will also ask the DJ to announce the names of the sponsors.  The membership was urged to patronize the sponsors.

Meeting Places—Dianne Shaw stated it is difficult doing the buffet and it entailed a lot of work for the person trying to make the arrangements—in this case-her.  Head counts had to be given before the meeting. If someone does not show up for the meal and they were counted as coming, the club would be responsible for that person’s bill which would subsequently be passed on the member.  She felt it necessary to personally call those who did not call her.  At this particular meeting 37 people said they would eat but only 35 did actually eat off the buffet.  Joanne Saltarelli pointed out the Zwirz’ had signed up to eat but had arrived late and there was no food left so they ordered off the menu. Another issue was that the entire bill was presented to Dianne to sort out.  Therefore, because of all the problems associated with a buffet either at this restaurant or any other it was suggested we continue to try to find places that would let us order off the menu and give separate checks.  Dianne found two  places that were willing to do this.  The places were Doyle’s Restaurant on rte. 113 and Bonanza.  Doyle’s Restaurant was agreed upon by those present.

Dianne will be taking orders fro shirts and jackets tonight.  Doc Romansoff asked if caps and visors were available.  Dianne will try to get samples.

Rick Berry announced that the papers for incorporation should be arriving soon.  They were delayed because we used our PO Box address which is not acceptable.  Rick will use his address as the address where the papers can be mailed.

Connie Magee announced that she has asked the executive committee to review the bylaws for any needed changes and asked all members to do the same.

Connie Magee stated we have a lot of money in our treasury and suggested we donate some to charity.  She asked for suggestions for recipients.   After discussion it was decided to give $100.00 each to five different charities.

Connie asked if we wanted to donate a trophy to the American Legion car show.  We have never done this before.  Rick Berry felt this would be setting a precedent and we probably shouldn’t do it.  The suggestion was tabled for the time being.

There was no trivia quiz this month.

Door prizes were donated by Connie Magee and Gene Ponzillo both from 1st State Chevrolet. They were won by Michelle Esposito and Barbara Romansoff.

The 50/50 was won by Wayne Esposito.

The next meeting will be at Doyle’s Restaurant.

The meeting was adjourned.
